Silent Auction Raises Money for Deaf Students

Linda Johnson is not an auctioneer by trade.

But at a recent silent auction in Huntington, she helped lend a voice so someone can live a dream her father was not able to experience. Williamson Johnson was deaf.

"So he didn't pursue that dream, so decided to just work, and take care of his family but if he were here today he would be proud and honored to be a part of this," Linda Johnson said.

So Johnson participated in the auction to raise scholarship money so another deaf student can go to Marshall Community and Technical College.

"He had a love for the hearing world. He had a love for the deaf world and his vision was that deaf students would be able to go to college," Leigh-Ann Brewer with MCTC said.

Betty Johnson met her husband at a school for the deaf. They married and had two children who can hear. Now, she is looking forward to hearing what student will benefit from the money.

The auction raised enough money for one $1500 scholarship. Organizers say they are close to making a second one available.

Once the application process is complete, they will be applied to deaf or hearing impaired students' fall tuition bill to Marshall Community and Technical College.
