Cumberland Times-News - Signs of the season

After much practice, a group of kindergartners traveled to Allegany High School to show off their sign language skills in front of a very appreciative audience.

“It makes me feel good when I’m signing to someone who’s deaf,” said 5-year-old Bella Bioncone.

Bioncone and her classmates at the Humpty Dumpy Learning Center learned how to perform Christmas songs in sign language for students in Allegany High School’s deaf education program.

“They are really excited that someone is interested in their way of life,” said deaf education instructor Tiffany Mock.

“It’s just really fun,” Allegany senior Kyler Daniels said of the sign language performance. “Not a lot of people in our area know how to sign.”

The younger people are, the easier it is for them to learn sign language, according to Daniels, who learned how to sign when she was 2 years old.

Five-year-old Isaac Llewellyn said learning how to sign was “a little bit hard.”

“We practiced a lot,” said 6-year-old Makena Humbertson.

“The First Noel,” “Up on the Housetop” and “He is King” made up the children’s holiday concert set list.

After their performance, the kindergarten students had opportunities to ask the high school students how to sign certain words, such as flower, star, train and cake.

Rachel Levine, an aspiring teacher and Allegany junior who learned how to sign when she was 2 or 3 years old, enjoyed answering the children’s questions and teaching them words in sign language.

The students began learning sign language in August, said kindergarten teacher Cheryl Hutzell.
