On November 16th the Women's Resource Center, Student Special Services and the Center on Deafness: Inland Empire (CODIE) sponsored an event to support a community of deaf and hard of hearing artists. These talented artists along with UCR students came together to showcase remarkable paintings that express their feelings on relationship violence and abuse.
The group of artists attending the event showcased truly impressive paintings. Melissa Savlov, a graduate student of sociology at UCR put her paintings on display to speak for victims whose voices have been silenced. She explains that although she is not deaf, she felt that it was necessary to show her support by submitting some of her pieces.

Her painting entitled "San Andreas Heartbreak" provides viewers with a visual representation of inner turmoil. The picture frame encompasses a heart shaped figure that is adorned with huge splashes of color. These enormous blotches appear to represent the bruises caused by the violence and betrayal of a loved one.

Savlov's "When Love Doesn't Fit In" proves to be equally enticing. The painting pictures a woman, whose face has been bloodied and disfigured on one side, effectively conveying a dark tone that does not shy away from the truth behind abuse. The painting also allows admirers to understand the pain of an abused individual by engaging in a one on one connection.

The purpose of this gallery is to expose UCR students to the work of hearing impaired artists; however, the artists also have the intention of drawing attention to the lack of resources in the deaf community.

The artists will be auctioning off their work to help raise money and provide more resources to deaf individuals. One way in which these funds will be used is to provide police forces with interpreters so that deaf people can more easily report instances of domestic violence. The Center of Deafness is on a mission to provide deaf citizens with the resources they need to live fully and functionally in society.

This showcase is just one of many ways in which the CODIE is trying to achieve its mission.
