OPB News · Schools for Blind, Deaf Head Toward Consolidation

The state board of education pushed ahead Thursday on consolidating schools for deaf and blind students.

But as Rob Manning reports, board members delayed an answer for another school

The Board’s two unanimous votes are not likely to please supporters of the schools involved.

First, board members agreed to support legislation that could close buildings at the School for the Blind, and the School for the Deaf, so that at least one campus could be sold.

School supporters have resisted the move. But board member Jerry Berger said something had to be done.

Jerry Berger: “Two schools were not sustainable the way they are now. And we are rationing education throughout the state of Oregon now, for all of our students.”

Later, board members voted to put off a request from the Oregon Connections Academy.

The on-line charter school wants a waiver to avoid a law that could reduce its enrollment. Board members may re-visit the request in the spring.

Lawmakers are debating bills related to both on-line education and the deaf and blind schools this session.

Wile I may not like this , the state of Oregon Is kinda screwed education wise acros the board schools are closing and techers are bing forced to have bigger classes then they can handle, this is why I get so fucking pissed off at people who think property taxes are to high when they are only 1% of your total propery value anyone who has a mortgage pays part of thier taxes each month into escarole , anyone else has the option to set it up with thier bank , or pay 4 times a year. we need our children educated , thats all it comes down to is a proper education , it would help if people would not buy home out side their meens so they can afford the taxes on their home.

I believe it could be help full to both schools at this point to consolidate I did some reading and it took son long to do something it's ither this or close both schools and that would be a mutch sadder thing for all the students and family's involved
