State Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek today announced a Nov. 3 target date for reopening the Louisiana School for Deaf, which has been closed amid reports of inappropriate behavior involving staff and students.
Pastorek said he plans to reopen the school in phases, allowing “the easier to handle students in the school first followed by the more challenging ones.”
The school reopening timeline is dependent on the ability to retrain security staff and install a surveillance system, Pastorek said during a news conferenc. The state Department of Education signed a $285,000 contract Friday to install cameras at public areas on the school’s campus, he said.
Pastorek also said that 25 percent of the teachers at the school are not proficient in American Sign Language and that they are taking classes to achieve proficiency.
He said he’s planning to hire more staff, with a focus on hiring faculty who can communicate with sign language.
