Wednesday, the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf officially opened its new Independent Living Center. The K-12 school serves deaf and hard-of-hearing students from the eastern half of the state. Nearly 90 percent of those students live on campus.

The new Independent Living Center is designed for high school juniors and seniors to prepare them to live on their own after high school. It features 12 small apartments that can house 24 to 46 students. The apartments include an efficiency kitchen and bathroom. There is also a laundry facility in the center.

In addition to cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry, the program also teaches students other things they'll need to be self-sufficient.

“They will have an opportunity to learn budgeting skills such things as managing their checkbooks for example,” explained Yvonne Barnes, Principal of Eastern NC School for the Deaf

North Carolina paid $3.2 million to renovate and expand the building.
