Mount View School for the Deaf in Thyolo is struggling to pay 16 members of staff and settle electricity and water bills, The Daily Times has learnt.

The school, which receives a monthly subvention of K220,000 from government is faced with an electricity bill of over K200,000. In addition, the salaries of the 16 supporting staff cost K140,000 every month, according to the school’s head teacher, Cassidy Magreta.

“Looking at the bills we have to pay and the salaries for supporting staff, one can easily conclude that the subvention is too little to cater for all that and for recurrent expenses.

“We are urging the government to consider topping up the subvention. This problem is not only for Mount View, but also for Mua and Montfort School in Chiradzulu. However, we appreciate the role government is playing to uplift the education standards of the deaf.

“Government is paying all the teachers’ salaries and we don’t have a problem with that. Government has a lot of activities that need financial attention but teachers on this institution are not left in the cold,” explained Magreta.

Deputy Minister of Basic Education Olive Masanza said she needed time to check and respond to the concerns raised about the school.
