The N.C. School for the Deaf’s annual art show opened downtown Thursday, giving the public as well as the students a chance to admire original artwork and, according to coordinators, a chance to praise the students’ accomplishments.

The event celebrates its 16th year hosting this gallery and, according to Beth Bailey, one of the show’s coordinators, the students and community grow from this experience.

“This is a great chance for the community to get out and see what the school’s students have to offer,” Bailey said. “These students are visual learners, so this gives them a chance to see how much they’ve grown, as well as show the community what these students have accomplished.”

Kimbery Lajzer, the second part of the coordinating duo, said this show gives the community the opportunity to see the students as more than just “deaf.”

“A lot of times people don’t know what these students are capable of,” Lajzer said. “This show gives them that opportunity.”

Lajzer explained that since the school teaches the students through many pivotal points in development, this show helps them not only see their own growth but their peer’s growth as well.

“It’s important for these kids to see what they’ve accomplished, and this show helps them to do that,” Lajzer said.

Star stickers were given to attendants for them to vote on what they thought was the best piece of art.

“We are giving out stars for people to put on the name tags below the art and whoever gets the most stars can feel accomplished, knowing theirs was picked as the best,” Lajzer said. “This is just a way for us to show them that people really did enjoy their work, and it doesn’t just help the ‘winner,’ it shows them all that people enjoyed their work.”

The venue for this exhibit was changed after a scheduling conflict but, according to Bailey, Ruddy Bell let them host the show in his empty space downtown.

“He was so generous to let us use his store,” Bailey said. “He deserves credit.”

The gallery is located in what was formerly Kristy’s Bookshelf. “We are so pleased with this location,” Bailey said. “It’s perfect for our gallery.”

The exhibit will be open to the public during TGIF tonight and according to the gallery coordinators could possibly stay open through next Friday. After the gallery is closed the coordinators said they will travel to Raleigh to showcase select pieces of the student’s art.
