Closing the SD School for the Deaf may not be a done deal.
The Legislature is considering it's options, as the Joint Appropriations Committee wants more information. Governor Mike Rounds had recommended closing the school to save the state $2M. But Board of Regents director Tad Perry is proposing working with USD to develop a curriculum in a local school district, yet to be named, for kids who use sign language to communicate.
"We think this provides the best alternative for those students who need what I'll call the specialized classrooms for sign language and auditor oral," Perry told Action News.
Perry says this proposal will need to put $775K back in the budget and the Joint Appropriations Committee will make their recommendations within the next 48 hours.
