School for Deaf buildings being renovated (10:24 a.m.) - Las Cruces Sun-News

The cranes on the campus of the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe show that a major renovation is under way.
But the $7 million renovation of Connor Hall largely will go unnoticed from the outside.

There will be only minor tweaks to the facade of the Pueblo Revival building, which is listed on the state and national historic registries.

The changes include replacing the exterior finish with one that's more insulating, restuccoing the building to match the original color and putting in modern windows that resemble the old ones.

Connor Hall is being transformed from a dormitory into educational space with a computer lab, art studio and wood shop.

Superintendent Ron Stern says the update will better serve the students.
