Scheme to help improve services for deaf people (From Messenger Newspapers)
A NEW pilot scheme will aim to improve the services that police in Trafford provide for deaf people.
A group of 15 volunteers, including both officers and police staff, took part in a new deaf awareness-training course on December 9.
The training was provided by deaf support group Genie Networks and was specifically tailored to assist officers and staff in common situations they may encounter.
Participants were given information on a range of subjects such as communication tactics and methods, using an interpreter, the Disability Discrimination Act and British sign language.
The session was part of a pilot scheme for GMP’s Trafford division, which will be reviewed and evaluated before it is rolled out on a permanent basis.
Chief Superintendent Janette McCormick said: “It is vital that we, as a service, are as accessible to the deaf community as possible to enable them to report crime and other issues to us.
“Police in Trafford have come a long way in recognising and meeting the needs of the deaf community and it is our aim to make it as easy as possible for everyone to contact us.”
