SC deaf and blind students take virtual trips - State & Regional - Wire - The State

Officials at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind say a new video conferencing system is already providing benefits.

The system has high-level audio and real-time video, critical for the students because delays or skipped images can cause more confusion with the school's students than with students who have normal sight and hearing.

Students have already used the system to visit the Smithsonian and NASA while never leaving the Spartanburg campus.

Faculty and administrators also will use the technology for meetings with the school's outreach campus in Columbia.

The communication system was paid for from a gift to The Walker Foundation from the Spartanburg Downtown Sertoma Club and through a federal grant.
