LANSING -- SBC Communications Inc. could lay off as many as 1,000 Michigan workers over the next few years as the telecommunications giant consolidates its regional customer service operations, a spokesman said Thursday.
The San Antonio-based company plans to lay off 500 workers over the next two years and another 500 workers could lose their jobs after that, SBC spokesman Matt Resch said.
The Michigan layoffs are among those going on in the 13 states where SBC provides telephone service, but the number of Michigan workers laid off will dwarf others in the Midwest, Resch said.
Although the company layoffs will happen across the Michigan, Resch said most will be concentrated in Southfield, Detroit and Saginaw.

Be sure to give Bush a big fat thank for these job cuts.
