Sandra Day O'Connor retires

So what are you really saying, Ravensteve? Didn't you make an agreement to come back a kinder and gentler person from the exile of your own making? It seems odd that you keep spitting into the wind when you can plainly see the results, dude, of your own double standards. What happened to you, man? You used to have some real insights in the political process but lately it seems you are just rolling over to die along with any sense you had left. Talk to us.
Sure, we will bite but so what?

Im Making a point about the democrats. They cant even keep a simple deal they made at the senate. If you cant keep a deal or a promise why should the american people listen or belive a word you say? Its like what bill clinton promised and said he would do if we voted for him.He promised to raise taxes on the wealthy during his campaign promises. Instead he raised taxes on the little people. The working middle class. So if the democrats go back and fillabuster then i think the whole america would back the republicans on their nuclear option.Plus more democrats will lose their seats in 2006 election.

I am scratching me head in puzzlement here. Everyone on the internet knows what a barefaced liar Bush and his administration is, yet we do not hear any outrage. Instead, the emotions are directed elsewhere, whether it be Bill Clinton or Michael Jackson or whatever else will work. Bush all but signed a confession in the Downing memos that he deliberately lied to the American people to drag us into a war, an impeachable offense, and we hear nothing more about it. (By the way, THAT shoots down any contention that the media is liberal, they would have had field days with this. Any reporter who dares to try to pursue this gets consigned to other duties.)
I could go on and on and on, but I have come to the conclusion that in the end, things get balanced out. I am not worried any more, just curious.
What are you trying to convince yourself of, exactly?

WE WERE ATTACKED ON 9-11 !!!! Besides i didnt hear anyone complant on FDR getting america in WWII against hitler when he didnt do a thing to america. And the japs bomber peral harbor and i didnt hear complants about FDR making a declaration into war back in 1941. So Bush did the right thing but my complant is WE GOT SADDAM now its time to go home. Just like what harry truman did after berlin was attacked and hitler died he sent our men home.

I am sad to see Justic O'Connor go. :(

I'd like to see someone similar to O'Connor replace her. She hated being labeled but I would definitely call her a conservative moderate.

She bucked the trend ... She was the 1st woman appointed to SCOTUS, she was the most pragmatic of the 9 judges and many of her rulings reflect her even-handedness.

Some of you have mentioned abortion issues. In my opinion, even if a conservative idealogue is appointed, Roe v. Wade is not likely to be overturned unless a right to privacy or lack thereof is amended to the bill of rights.

Little known fact: Norma McCorvey (AKA: Jane Roe) did not have an abortion.

As far as my personal opinion on abortion goes, I'll keep that one to myself.

See!!! Thats the crap democrats do!!! Again Mel Feit is right!!! MEN HAVE NO RIGHTS! Even the guy tried to help someone with an abortion. But when a woman does it kills her own baby no charges would be filed just like the courts overturned andrea yates death penalty verdict.

Lets step away from the nonsense that is ravensteven, and get back on topic. Abortion is not very likely to be overturned at all, and it is naive to think so at all. One judge being replaced does cannot guarentee the needed amount of votes to overturn a ruling. Also, Jane Roe, is now an born again Christian, pushing for the pro-life agenda. Crazy huh?

I don't see this playing out reasonably at all. George Bush has continued to show bad judgement in his decisions again and again, and with a Republican majority rule in Congress, I don't see this playing out to any interests other than conservatives. John Bolton, a constant slanderer and mocker of the UN, being nominated as US Ambassador to the UN is proof enough of this.

Democrats are actually being very reasonable about this. An agreement was made between 14 senators, 7 Democrats, and 7 Republicans, that the president would seek the advice of Congress in his nomination, and in return, Democrats will not issue a filibuster unless in case of an "extreme circumstance."

Here is an interesting article concerning the matter. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050702/NEWS06/507020490

You dont understand what bush is trying to do. Bush is trying to put back we lost during the 60s. Its those 60s hippies who ruined the american society.Look at our dumb laws today. One of them is you cant whack a child with yardstick or with a hairbrush. You cant even whip em with a belt. The bible says "" SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD!"" Im tired of child psychatrist saying the best way to disapline your child is by using a time out.BULLSHIT!! Thats why kids are taking guns, weapons and drugs to school cause the parents cant or dont know how to disapline their child. Look at columbine high in littleton colorado. That would never happend if their parents used a yardstick ,a hairbrush. Or whip em with a belt.My father welped me with a belt across my back and boy!!! i knew when not to mess up again. Thats why we need to abolish this liberal crap before it really destroys america.

Gosh, Ravensteve you are absolutefuckinright.

I can understand why you are sick of child psychologists, they get on your nerves, don't they? I mean, look at you! You ought to try a team of specialists in say, Vienna next time.
I am just wondering, though, if your mother would be willing to give you hand-jobs as often as you shrilly demand, once your hands are chopped off by one of your right-winging heros. I mean, come on, you live with your mother and you already admitted to peeing in the shower and wanking off, and I assure you, your mother is aware of it. Does that make you hot?
Go to Mommy then. Have fun.

Steve, wake up! Not everything was perfect before the 60s. No social event or legislation changed the way things were. The Republican Party is in complete control right now. They're not doing anything about the ridiculous amount of laws. Do you have anything bad to say against them? Nope. They're perfect. Heck, if anything, they're passing more ridiculous legislation.

Whipping children does nothing but create a distaste for the parent and can lead to dabilitating phobias later on in life. My dad use to beat me with a "switch." Now I flinch whenever I see a sudden jerking motion like somethings going to hit me. Does that sound like discipline to you? I have a fear of vaccuum cleaners now because of events like this when I was younger.

The Bible verse you speak of is Proverbs 13:24. It can be interpeted like that if you want, but it surely doesn't say, "beat the shit out of your children and everything will be great." Don't put too much stock in the Bible. It is a loose collection of books written by MAN over a period of 1500 years.

You're theory about Columbine is absurd. Columbine had nothing to do with parent's disciplining. It had to do with a duo of pretentious and anti-social teenagers who were mentally ill enough to think they were justified in the killing of people they think didn't treat them fairly. It was about social treatment, and not because their parent's didn't beat them.

Now, Jesus Christ, stay on topic or stop posting.

He (ravensteve) can't take a thread off-topic if we ignore his posts. I think that'll be my policy from now on based on the crackpot posts I've seen.

If your child has a temper tantrum, kicking and screaming, the last thing you do is give them attention until their behavior improves, is that not correct? ;)

I wish I had the faith you do. I don't trust Bush to make a choice in the best interests of the American people.

At least not while that scummy piece of shit Karl Rove is his adviser. That guy is the spawn of satan.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Karl Rove is a manipulative tool. Cunniving person whose only purpose is to serve Republican interests. I just had a lunch with a very conservative friend of mine (and to prove how conservative he is, I asked him "who would your ideal president be" and he responded "Ronald Reagan"), admits that Karl Rove is a manipulative tool.

cental34 Your dad hit you with a switch. You must have done something bad to deserve it. My dad welped me with a belt across my back and he continue do it until 1975 when the law went to in effect. I showed my doctor my belt mark and he said""Who did this to you?"" I said my daddy! So after i put my clothes back on he called my mother in his office and she got really angry in the car and said""" YOU DARE PULL THAT SHIT AGAIN YOU WILL NOT WATCH TV FOR A MONTH.""" Boy i know what the doctor told her... He said he was gonna call the police if he sees my belt marks again. So my mom wont allow me to see that doctor again.

Well then your mom is certifiably insane if thats going to be her stance to not let you see the doctor because he cares for your well being.

And no, I didn't deserve to be beat with a switch. I wouldn't arguing with my sister in the back of the car. Thats what. No child deserves to be beaten for that, and if you think so, you either are or will be a bad parent.

Do you like to play games with yourself to see how many times you can go off topic.

Nuclear Option Is..

for those of you who might not understand what "Nuclear Option" means, it means this-

This is from Wikipedia-

Currently, Senate rules allow any member to prevent a confirmation vote by staging a filibuster. This can be overridden by a three-fifths majority (60 out of 100 senators) via a cloture motion. The nuclear option would allow a simple majority (50 out of 100 senators, plus the Vice President) to end a judicial filibuster. Once cloture is achieved, the nominee presumably can be confirmed by a simple majority vote.

So, basically, the Founders decided that ony 60 out of 100 Senators can stop a filibuster. The nuclear option would change the rule to 50 out of 100. I don't think a nuclear option should be used because 50 out of 100 is not majority rules, and it is not fair especially when the numbers are very close like it is right now with Democrat and Republican Senators. In the future, the Democrats will increas in the Senate again (like it did before), and I will still not support the nuclear option then.

Just wanted to clear it up- that doesn't have anything with democrats shutting down government or whatever. Geez.

And Guess what,,The day democrats take over is the day republicans will not play fair anymore and theyre gonna fillabuster just like the democrats did.

Ravensteve,

Yes, the Republicans will filibuster some day. Good!

That is exactly what the point is. That the minority party will be able to have some power over the process in some ways. I will nto complain when the Republicans filibuster some day. It is their right to do so, just like the Democrats have the right to filibuster now.

That is all part of our consitutional process, and I fully support it.
