San Francisco Fleet Week Sailors Visit School for the Deaf

USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and local area Sailors participating in San Francisco Fleet Week visited the California School for the Deaf Oct. 10.

“It’s a privilege to work with these students,” said Machinist's Mate 2nd Class (SS) Martine L. Willard, assigned to the Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) San Jose.

Willard conducted morning colors with Personnel Specialist 1st Class Zenaida Ancheta also from NOSC San Jose. The national anthem was sung by Lt. Cmdr. Ross Orvik from Navy Recruiting District San Francisco and was signed by Lt. Raul Mejorado from Navy Information Operations Center, Camp Parks, Calif. and an interpreter while students watched, signed and sang along.

The Fleet Week Sailors also introduced the semaphore flag signaling system to the deaf students, competed in a visual communication contest and assisted in campus cleanup.

“I showed a few classes the semaphore alphabet, and they were impressed, as far as their alphabet by hand and ours is an extension of our arms, that we were able to communicate just as well as they could,” said Quartermaster 2nd Class Regina Turner from Nimitz.

The Sailors also received a tour of the campus.

“I thought it was a wonderful and unique opportunity for our students to meet the Sailors and to learn about U.S. Navy's programs as well,” said Cheryl L. Boyd, an Outreach Specialist for the California School for the Deaf for 11 years. “One of my favorite parts was that the Sailors demonstrated some signals to our elementary and middle school students, getting our students to participate in a fun activity while they learned something at the same time. We are fortunate to have this kind of experience.”

The California School for the Deaf was founded in 1860 and was the first special education program established in California. The campus at Fremont opened in 1980.

Throughout San Francisco Fleet Week 2006, nearly 700 Sailors participated in 21 different community relations projects.

Thats so cool. Glad they had a chance to know how the soldiers communicate with others during war.
