In the Trenches: Sales in sign language | news-press.com | The News-Press

Dia Pileta and Tray Bournazian are using their fluency in American Sign Language to aid car shoppers at John Marazzi Nissan who communicate primarily through that language.

Pileta learned the language about one and a half years ago with her daughter Jennifer, 11, who has a close friend who is deaf. Bournazian's parents were deaf, so he began signing as a child so he could communicate with and assist them.

Lori Timson, executive director of the Deaf Service Center of Southwest Florida, in south Fort Myers, said John Marazzi Nissan is the only local dealership that offers sign language services.

"Most dealerships will make people aware they are multi-lingual and American Sign Language is another language," Marazzi said. "We wanted to reach out to that community and let them know we have some key members here who can offer them help in sales and all their service needs."

John Marazzi signers
Name: Tray Bournazian

Age: 36

Company name and city/town: John Marazzi Nissan In Naples

Job/position: Sales Consultant

Why you selected this position: I love this job because I interact with people really well and excel with product knowledge, and the after-the-sale relationship as well

Short-term goals: To be as successful here with John Marazzi Nissan as I was at Fort Myers Toyota.

Long-term goals: To become sales manger and keep providing the same level of service I provide now.

Favorite moment at work: When I have a happy customer driving away with a great deal, who loves the car and everything is great

Most challenging moment at work: To help customers who are credit-challenged. To get them into a car when other dealers say no.

Hobbies, interests and activities: I love working on my car and spending time with my family, and drag racing.

Family: I have three handsome boys and they are my life.

Favorite movie of all time: "The Fast and the Furious"

Role model and why: My parents because they had so much against them in life, from start to finish: being deaf, doing what they could to survive and raising 13 kids. I always loved my dad's saying, "It's me against the world," and I live by that saying everyday.

Name: Dia Pileta

Age: 31

Company name and city/town: John Marazzi Nissan in Naples

Job/position: Service advisor

Why you selected this position: Because it is customer service and it's fun working with customers. As a woman in the automotive business, I think it is great to teach other women how to care for their new and used vehicles. It's a continuous education for me, with new models every year.

Short-term goals: Build strong customer relationships here in Naples, just like I did in Fort Myers.

Long-term goals: Continue to build a great career at John Marazzi Nissan.

Favorite moment at work: Every time that I can help a customer.

Most challenging moment at work: Language. I got the opportunity to start working with John Marazzi with little or almost no English, so every day I challenged myself to learn and practice. This is a big barrier that anyone can experience and anyone can overcome.

Hobbies, interests and activities: I am a licensed commercial pilot and walking is my favorite exercise.

Family: An 11-year-old daughter, a 3-month-old Maltese puppy and a husband of seven years.

Last book read: "The Secret"

Favorite movie of all time: "Rush Hour"

Role model and why: My parents, because I owe them for making me everything that I am.
