Today I have a dr's appt so I hope I will get good news on the scale. Each time, I was always disappointed..always the same or more. Never down. *crossing fingers*

Hello everyone! I have been going back to running and jogging in recent weeks and becoming addicted to it now. Anyone else like to run/jog?

My goal is to run 5 miles a day. For now, I can run a half a mile cuz of my knees hurting. I plan on buying better shoes next week so hopefully that will help.

Anyone run/job 5 miles a day? How long does it take? I hope to do it in an hour cuz that would be all the time I have to spare.

Since starting my daily walk/jog each morning on the first week of July, I have noticed that my arms and legs are getting thinner but MOST of all, my stomach is getting flatter. Whaoooo!!!

some wee advice from me i used to do running too

ok now hope you got a good pair of shoes, it doesnt have to be the most expensive Nike, or Asics, (i liked sauconys (didnt really care about brands just the fittings and feel of the ground interacting with the sole, oh and grip i do a hand-feel test on the soles cant explain that one here but all i can say if it feels not so grippy as next shoe you can be sure it arent gonna be as good as the next one when it begins to rain) but sauconys was hard to get here, so i got a Asics on a half-price specials) what you should ALWAYS do, warm up slowly, do some stretching on the hams and calf but DONT overboard it, just gentle stretch, then when start running/jogging go slow (think of that itself as part of the warm up), i mean slow then say mentallly tell youself to go up to half or three-quarters of that normal pace within a 1/2 km (or 10-15 mins later, better 15mins, its easier on you in the long run) later then double that distance to bring up your pace to your normal speed. another good idea is , try if you can, run on the grass strips (watching out for dog shits as you go along) the idea is to avoid hard concrete as much as you can , it is hard on your ankles and knees (marathon runners will tell you that they regretted being on concrete for too long, you just dont hear it on TV , cus the sport (and them) just want in it for glory and deny the pain). Believe me shocks arent not entirely absorbed by the super-duper wonder sponge/rubber hybrid that you paid $200 for your running 'needs', dont believe it, it helps sure but it doesnt get rid of it.
i dont expect you to believe me about grass/concrete or agree with me, you can do whatever you want, its just my opinion.

buy a couple pairs of running socks would be sensible too, and wash it , wear fresh one everytime, you dont want to develop atheltics' feet, its nasty and very very hard to get rid of, often you got it for life.
lastly dont get sucked in buying all that bullshit running clothes, just a good fitting pair of shoe, be sure it fits well and have the right type for your feet , not the looks/brands ok good to get decent brand but if it doesnt fit, go for the one that fit better but yes soles are important but they arent miracle you still have to run/jog regularly to have the results.
oh you dont need the flash runner socks, like a get a good one, if you're in a colder climate (or grassy area as it itchy as you run), tennis socks would be wonderful to keep your ankles warm too.
oh last thing, as soon as you get home or (at gym) take that soaking sock off into the washing machine (or plastic bag then go home), and washing/dry the feet before putting on your normal shoes, that way you are protecting yourself from atheltics(sp?) feets.
Last thing, when you run, you dont need to swing your arms up high, it is draining your energy, just let the hand/wrists swing low, not LOWWWWW like your arms falling off, just run nomally, dont cleash your fist tightly just it slack, relaxed and composed, the whole idea of doing distance - medium distance is supposed to be 'easy-manageable' just run. you might find at some stage couple months, 6 months away your body runs faster, the body moves forward, you need to hold back the speed as your find yourself stuffed , tired from going too fast too soon, the whole idea is really getting to know your pace for the distance and fitness. I found that toward the end of running i like to speed up and try say for last 15 mins to speed up progressively then sprint like the last 200-300 metres then stop.....but i never stop i walk in circles , around places for like 5-10 mins as warming down, as all about good transition and looking after your self and say you had a good run.
good luck.

Shel - since your knees are hurting.... it's probably cuz you were running on hard street/concrete ground. It is known to cause injury to feet/knees because the ground is very hard. the evolution didn't design human body for concrete ground. It is recommendable that you run on treadmill or at school track field cuz it has soft asphalt ground. Or you can run on grass/trail.

he said it! well, but yah threadmill is Boring no wind, weather, change of scenary, chances of bumping to people (ok they have posers in leotards in the gyms but they arent 'real people').......

this is exactly what i was talking about, try make a note of running on grass, and minimising crossing concrete driveways end to the road while at it, try to keep your running as level as possible with the footpath (oh you mean sidewalk in america lol)

so ya good luck

take it slow, dont go mental, consider running as a 'conditioning excercise, not a test for speed or fitness, you can but make that for much, much later on.... ok ? so think gentle conditioning but fun)

Thanks for the excellent advice, Grummer!

Well, I went to the dr today for my checkup. Good news! I lost 8 lbs since the begining of July!!! *WOOOT*!!!!

Just like 12 years ago, once I start running the pounds come off. I know that doing a complete makeover with my eating habits helped too. :)

I will buy new shoes on Tuesday. First, I had to use my money for my daughter's school supplies. Kids always come first...lol.

I run 3 times a week every week. two days in the gym and one day at the park. they have 3 miles trail. I go there every thursday after work whenever its rain or shine.

aww CONGRATULATIONS on your losing weight! *pat on your back* you do deserve it. Keep it up but remember slow and take it easy and enjoy your workout than forcing yourself. :)

ah i don't blame you for allowing kids to have stuff first then you. Me too. I am trying to save $ for kids school supplies and clothes. life goes on.

Congrats Shel!!!! Keep up the exercise! It's difficult to stay on a certain diet at the beginning, once you're used to it you will be fine :D

I used to walk all the time when I got job. Sometimes, I did run. It was good exercise or my body and legs since my job was so active and hard work. :)

My opinion, the running is in my imagination to think of escape from anything is danger. It's worth option to choose. :)
