The Tokyo-based company, which announced a business alliance with Google Inc. on May 20, plans to base the new products on Google's Android operating system, the main rival to the iPhone OS operating system. It expects to start worldwide distribution later this fiscal year.

The company already has a strong lineup of portable electronic brands, including the PlayStation Portable mobile videogame console, the Xperia smartphone and the Walkman portable music player. The new strategy is to wrap those functions together in multi-functional devices. (Dev, Industry, Next-Gen, PSP, psp hardware, Sony)

this sounds like more promise.. but lets wait and see..

The device will have a screen between 3.7 and 4.1-inch with WVGA resolution or higher and may include a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor at 1 GHz speed and it will also have a 5 Mpx camera. Specifications may vary, but this combination is per se already astonishing.

The exterior will be black with silver accents. You will have some controls that will slide under the display like in the same way as the current Portable PlayStation.

The Android operating system will be the version 3.0 or aka Gingerbread. It will have an interface with access to a special section of the Android Market for video games. It is not clear whether the games that are available for this console will also be compatible with the terminals “normal” Android. Part of the catalog that Sony has developed for their current consoles reach the Android Market with titles such as Modern Warfare, or Little Big Planet. The graphic quality of games would be a midpoint between the old PSX and PSP of today and may also include some form of virtual reality.
