Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind gets donation - Local News - News - General - Hills News

CHRISTMAS came early for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children Teleschool in North Rocks when it received $29,200 from the St George Foundation last month.

The money will help support families in rural and regional areas who have children with impaired hearing or vision. The Teleschool uses innovative technology to provide educational services to children across Australia.

St George Foundation is not only providing financial support but will also help the institute to install video-conferencing equipment into the homes of four families, in NSW, Tasmania, Western Australia and Queensland.

Melissa McCarthy, who manages the Teleschool told the Hills News she was thrilled to get the donation.

"It is such a nice opportunity for us to support families in rural and regional areas," Ms McCarthy said.

"RIDBC relies on charitable donations like this."

At a touch of a television remote, the Teleschool can use video-conferencing equipment to bring the unique educational quality of institute teaching straight into the lounge rooms of families who may otherwise not have access.

St George's senior relationship manager for corporate and business banking, Glenn Tullia, said the institute was nominated as the funding will help continue the organisation support more than 950 children and their families.

"We hope to give children in regional areas the same opportunities as others," Mr Tullia said.

"We understand how isolating and challenging it can be for regional families."
