Rosseau man linked to deaf camp thefts - Parry Sound

A Rosseau man appeared in a Bracebridge court last week after police found two stolen ATVs, a stolen snowmobile and a stolen outboard motor on his property.

Assistant Crown attorney Mike Newell explained that on May 1, 2007, Ontario Provincial Police officers executed a search warrant on the property of Terry Deschamps, 40, because they believed him to be connected with a number of thefts throughout the Muskoka area.

Court heard that when police searched the Rosseau property they found items including a 1999 Yamaha ATV stolen from Huntsville, a 2002 snowmobile stolen from the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve, and a 2006 15-horsepower outboard motor stolen from a Muskoka residence.

In the yard they also found a 1998 Honda ATV, which had been reported stolen from the Bob Rumball Camp for the Deaf near Parry Sound, the court heard.

In a case that garnered attention in the Parry Sound area, Jamie Pickles, 40, of McDougall pleaded guilty to stealing several ATVs from the Camp for the Deaf.

Newell said Pickles and Deschamps know each other, and he asked Judge J.D. Evans to order the pair not to associate with one another.

Newell said Deschamps has a criminal record, but the Crown cannot prove that he played any role in actually stealing any of the vehicles on his property.

Newell admitted that convicting Deschamps through a trial could be very difficult based on the vast timeline of the crimes and victims ranging from Haliburton to Parry Sound.

As such, he said the Crown and defence had agreed to ask for six months house arrest.

“I’ll make sure to check things out a little more before I buy them,” said Deschamps.

“That’s a good idea, but it should have occurred to you years ago,” said Judge J.D. Evans.

“You have a significant criminal record…and it is with some reluctance that I agree to the joint submission.”

In addition to six months house arrest, Deschamps was also sentenced to two years probation with a condition to stay away from Pickles and to pay back $800 in restitution.
