State statistics show higher unemployment rates for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. All high school students – college bound or not – must take a vocational program and do a summer internship in addition to math, English and other typical courses. After graduation, most seniors continue their training in college or head into internships or job programs.
“Just having a high school diploma is not enough,” said Jeannine De Loye, a program technician on campus for WorkAbility, which places students in internships and helps graduates find jobs.
In the state, the unemployment rate for people who are hard-of-hearing or deaf was 15.7 percent, compared to 11.6 for all Californians, in 2011.
Officials at the deaf school, one of two in the state, aim to prepare students for the additional education they will need to meet their goals.

This is an amazing idea. But, I hope the vocational training is skilled, and not say just bagging groceries or recycling
Dhh kids need job skills. This might increase enrollment since not all kids are college bound.....and heck, this would serve kids with mental disabilities very well.

The studies need set the divide for deaf populations because not all deaf people are born deaf and some of them are late deafness.

I want know about how much born deaf are unemployed, so I think it could be much higher than that.
sound look likes high highest percents also late deafness hoh!
I agree

Wow....back in the 60's-70's...not sure about the 80's...all students took vocational classes.

I took Print Shop, versus Office work/typing/filing, etc., and was the only female in the Print Shop, among male students learning Printing/linotype...I took Teletype...there were also Shoe Repair shops, among several others that I cannot recall...

And luckily that I did, as I was able to get a job at a small Newspaper along with 2 or 3 other deafies....Printing at that time, was a good job for deafies, especially in the big cities like Washington and Miami, even here in Jacksonville where I live...

Times have changed now....Printing has gone out and the Internet is in....feel all deafies need some sort of job training/vocational classes before graduating in case they don't plan to attend College. Perhaps a better opportunity to acquire jobs.....

Vocational education like what you experienced is pretty much non existent now. But yeah, I do think that they should bring back skilled vocational training for dhh and blind and other disabilities too. A college degree is no longer a ticket to success......

True that...if not for some training, more than likely I would have been working at a restaurant or some other low paying job, even a factory.....
