In celebration of International Deaf Day, a symposium was held on “the right to language for deaf Pinoys as medium of instruction” at the Quezon City Circle.

“Dapat i-promote ang linguistic identity and language of the deaf community,” said Liza Martinez of the Philippine Deaf Resource Center.

In the spirit of the occasion, Valenzuela 2nd District Representative Magtangol Gunigundo encouraged television networks to put sign language interpreters in their programming.

“Lalung-lalo na sa newscast, napakahalaga na mayroon tayong sign language interpreter doon sa screen,” said Gunigundo.

The last State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Benigno Aquino III was broadcast with a sign language interpreter and that was much appreciated by the deaf community.

“’Yung SONA natin itong nakaraan, first time in history na mayroong sign language interpreting,” said Martinez.

The Philippine Deaf Resource Center hopes the rest of the country follows the President's lead in recognizing the rights of the disabled.
