ridicuLIST: Hearing aids solve everything by Deaf Review

similar to Huggies used for BTE hearing aids, keeps them on behind the ear so they don't fall off.

will that work for people without earlobes? My ears just go straight to my head, no lobes.

It bypasses the damaged cochlea and sends electronic signals to the brain through the auditory nerve.

Correction: The electrodes stimulate the nerve endings in the cochlea, then the cochlea transmits the signals to the brain. A normal cochlea has millions of hair cells called 'cilia', which sense vibrations from the middle ear bones, and transmit those vibrations to the nerve endings. Those of us that are deaf due to infections in the cochlea have many dead hair cells. The electrodes are intended to replace the missing or dead cilia.

I saw an actual size cochlea from a cadaver, and was surprised at how small it was...about 1/4 inch long.

in the US, the're huggies, and Advanced Bionics calls them Snuggies (I ordered the snuggies from AB). My sister always think of me using huggie diapers to hold my processor on my ear when I talk of using them, so it's funny. Each CI manufacturer have their own accessories for keeping the processor on the ear.

Phonak call them PhonaFix so yea, everyone has different names.

If you choose Cochlear, the N5 with compact battery is very small compared to AB.

Some people still choose to wear an ear mold with theirs CIs to keep them on.

you won't need the to use the snuggie ...just some people do. The CI sits on top of your ear. If you go get evaluated and you're a candidate you can always ask to see the brands...Usually every office or centre has the brands processors so that you can feel/touch and try it on your ear to see what's comfortable for you. Obviously comfort shouldn't be your only concern. Like I said you should research the brands thoroughly and make a pros and cons list for each brand.

Question I have is this, I read the CI is non reversable, what does that mean? Does it mean if you have any hearing at all that you lose any hearing you have after the surgery and rely solely on the CI? or does it mean once you get it, you have it for life and cannot be removed? I am looking for info as I havent went to a specialist yet and getting confused with some of the website information.

Most people loose their hearing that they have left but some surgeons can implant and keep your natural hearing that you have left.

My friends son got implanted last year and he still have his natural hearing left altho he will never used it as he never benefited from HAs.

If you qualify for a CI, what hearing you'll lose is nothing compared to what you gain.

This website will tell you everything you need to know: cochlear implant HELP

Like the others have said a lot of surgeons now have different techniques they use for inserting the electrode so there is minimal damage to the cochlea thus people still have residual hearing afterward. Well you do have it for like unless you went back to your surgeon and said take it out for some odd reason.
Some people replace the electrode and I've heard of a few who haven't liked it and just stopped using the processor or gotten it removed for various reasons. But for the most part everyone I've personally talked to about their CI's have said hands down better than their hearing aids since the CI doesn't amplify and you can control your loudness and sensitivity as well.

I don't benefit from hearing aids anymore and my R ear is the worse ear of the 2. Do I really care that I may lose my residual hearing? not really because I know that the benefits of the CI are much better than what I'm not getting with my hearing aids.

i will have a new one, same as aliciaM ZEBRA, same brand next week. I hope i look OK with it. my hub has no idea that i get a zebra.

I did encourage my hub to take a cool blue or silver for his CI but he chose brown. blah! He's too simple.
