Retired military man posing as lesbian on blog pretended to be deaf, widowed with twins | Herald Sun

A RETIRED military man created a fake voice mailbox, posted pictures online of children he claimed were his, and described spreading his partner's ashes all in an attempt to maintain his alias as a lesbian on the website he edited called "Lez Get Real", a fellow contributor to the site revealed today.

Bill Graber, 58, pretended to be a lesbian named Paula Brooks so that the site could be taken more seriously, he told The Washington Post, but he took his new identity - as a widowed, deaf lesbian taking care of twin toddlers - a little too seriously for some contributors.

Blogger "Lezzymom," a contributor to "Lez Get Real" since 2008, claimed that she had spoken to a man who called himself "Bill Brooks", Paula's supposed father, four or five times over a couple of years. She was told that Paula was deaf, and had to speak through her father Bill in order to communicate over the phone.

When she tried the number today, she received a voice mailbox for Bill Brooks, a man who does not actually exist.

Washington Post reporters also spoke to the imaginary Bill Brooks when first trying to uncover Paula Brooks' true identity, the paper said.

Lezzymom had much interaction with the person she believed to be Paula Brooks, including pictures she received of twin toddlers, asking how their new haircuts looked. According to her blog posts, she also had several private chats on Google with Brooks, including one in which Brooks described spreading her partner Deb's ashes.

"Debbie is gone …Out in the Ocean now," Graber as Brooks allegedly wrote to Lezzymom in a Google chat conversation on May 24, 2009.

"I sit here in this house our house and I think she will walk through the door any monute."

Graber, who told the Post he created the site to combat the real-life mistreatment he said his gay female friends were subjected to, has angered contributors who believed "Paula" was their friend.

"If you are just doing this to blog as an activist to help the LGBT community then why create personal relationships like this. I did not start this conversation. I didn't ask if 'Deb's' ashes had ever been spread somewhere," Lezzymom wrote.

Although Graber told the Post he planned to hand over "Lez Get Real" to contributor Linda Victoire, the site appeared to be deactivated today.

When news broke that Tom MacMaster, a 40-year-old American man, admitted to blogging as Amina Araff on the blog "A Gay Girl in Damascus", suspicions rose over Brooks' identity.

Apparently the two men posing as lesbians corresponded with each other - neither knowing the other's true identity, the Post reported.
