Thank you, I need that.

On serious note: What was person thinking? First of all they steal copper wires everywhere in SF/Bay Area, and sell to make some profit. Now they are trying to make $$$ from cutting this (many many thousands years old) tree. Not brilliant move. If that person were caught, and I demand this person to take ecology 101 class, and serve 10 years in prison.

I learn new things everyday. What is burl and what is so special about burl ?

What is so special about burl? :laugh2: A turbocharged car with burl decorated interior is totally WASTE, because the value of car will always go down, why cutting down trees. Redwood Sequoia trees are valuable way more than turbocharged car with wood burl. :hmm:

Burls are kind of like a tumor or extra growth that happens on the outer wood of trees. They grow steadily and can get large. They get a lot really nice like figuring in the wood that shows up well when slabbed and sanded and polished. Burlwood from many kinds of trees is in demand.

These remaining old redwoods are a national treasure. It is strictly dollars and cents though for the logging industry which includes a wide range of operations from: a snaggle toothed meth head with a 4 wheeler made out of 6 wrecked ones and a big chainsaw that he stole from his elderly logger uncle in the half burned blue tarped travel trailer dying of emphysema; to the biggest logging contractors, timberland/pulp and paper/saw mill owners.

There is a whole industry in the woods based on salvage and gathering. These are often family operations that go back for generations of being kind of on the outside fringe of society. If it can be trapped or shot and sold for a price throw that in too.

There some women working in a park at my city , I am not but I think thy inmates and one woman saw a tree with a beautiful burl on it and the woman said she wish she had her chainsaw to saw it off the tree. :( I tried to tell the park care taker what the woman said but he was too busy. People here will cut the top of evergreen trees to sell as Christmas trees and they killed a lot of trees in our park. When I lived I Northern California someone told if you had redwood trees on your property you had to pay taxes on them , I have no idea if that is true.
