Hi!! This is kind of random, but I've always been curious about ASL, and when I happened across this site I thought it would be cool to stop in and ask a question every now and again. My school didn't offer an ASL class, and so far I've never met a deaf or hard of hearing person. I don't have any heavily invested interest in learning ASL, though I do know the alphabet because I randomly picked it up off a friend, and wouldn't mind learning it if the chance presented itself. I've been reading off and on about how ASL grammar works for fun sometimes because. It's all very interesting to me. My question, though is this: I've mostly read sentence structure goes "TIME, TIPIC, COMMENT." Is that the "most popular" way to do it? Because, can't anyone sign anything the way they want? I would think if you asked 10 people to sign the same thing, you would get a variation.

I've also heard of people who are just starting out signing in English word order because it's easier, I guess.Does that automatically equate to SEE, or is SEE something entirely different?

These are probably dumb questions, but I wanted to ask an actual person instead of a book for once.

Could we just say the search feature is easy to use and those questions have been answered multiple times? :P

I feel like your evil twin today as we go about responding to the same posts!
 
I'm sure there is someone where who is KIND enough to respond to this guys questions without having to use the search on AD. I'm rather dismayed at the lack of response and we wonder why the hearies don't stick around for long here?
I understand a lack of response due to not having an answer but I know there are quite a handful of people here that do have the answers to at least type a word or two. It goes both ways...
if he had insulted me as a Deaf woman although not intending to of course I'd be rather curt and not respond. These are innocent questions and some of you when you were learning ASL I'm sure had these same ones.

I'm surprised no one has really jumped in to answer the questions.
I would if I were fluent in ASL but I'm Oral Deaf.

You wanted an equal representation of hearing people on a forum named Alldeaf?
 
ASL has its own sentence rules ( syntax) just like English. Time Topic Comment is a basic one, such as subject verb is the basic structure for English. You can't just randomly put signs in order as you want...otherwise it'd be jumbled.

I do not understand her to be saying that at all. Perhaps no response to this person's question would have been kinder and more appropriate. Just saying no one is compelled to answer a question they might find personally annoying for whatever reason.

I have been here for 5 years and at first, I would answer these kinds of questions but after years of doing that, it gets tiresome.

I did think they had been answered before, but I didn't realize you could search for what was IN a topic. Thought you could only search for the topic title. So, I'll do that, thanks, but I can't promise I won't have some repeating questions still heh. Sorry.

:gpost: I completely agree... you can't learn it out of a book... and you can't learn it on a forum. Get involved in the Deaf community is the only way to actually learn about Deaf culture.

if you are being treated like that thru a forum then what makes you think you are going to be treated with any more respect in person? all i am saying is respect and kindness goes a long way....
