Hello all!

I'm new to the forum and hoping this is okay to post here.

I'm currently writing a deaf character for a book and looking for some verification on a couple of things. I've done a lot of research as I want the information to be accurate. But I think it's best to double check what I've read online as well.

So my first question is this:

Has anyone here suffered an illness or trauma (i.e. meningitis) which resulted in hearing loss, and if so, could you tell me if it was a complete loss of hearing or different levels in each ear?

For anyone who has had partial hearing loss in one or both ears, do people need to be within a certain distance before you can hear them?

Also, has anyone here experienced an unsupportive family environment after diagnoses (if it occurred in childhood or later in life), and if so, could you tell me some of the struggles with that and how it made you feel?

I hope these aren't stupid questions, but I just want to get a good feel for the subject matter and would really appreciate any feedback provided.

Thanks in advance!

I lost my hearing due to brain injury. It wasn't noticed in the beginning it took about a year for me to tell the difference. It's been 7 years and I have lost all hearing in my right ear and I have very little in my left. I isolated myself when I was unable to hear normal conversation in groups and even some one on one. I started to learn to read lips and then I started to learn to sign. I had an hearing aid for awhile in my worse ear til I lost all hearing now I'm getting a CI in a couple weeks. I will be getting a hearing aid for my left ear but I'm sort of thinking about getting 2 implants instead. My family didn't understand at first until they were around me enough to see when I'm lost or confused or just in my own little world. I'm not Deaf but deaf because I'm not in the Deac community which I hope to be someday.
