Question regarding why do the hearing people communicate with their babies in sign language while the general populace think it is better to teach the deaf babies how to speak instead of sign while it is proven widely that its the best communication method during the development of infant.

damn, I couldnt view the video at work. But i read your comment. yea thats so ironic!

He was asking why hearing families with hearing babies use baby signs, while deaf children don't get the same exposure and are expected to speak. It's his own vblog done in ASL. He rewrote the topic of discussion in English for non-ASLers.

Thanks souggy. I will check his thread later when i get home so i can see the whole story of his post. But according to his comment in his post, I only can say "thats ironic".

Baby vocal cords aren't mature enough or developed enough to speak with. So, gesturing or use rudimentary signs gives them the avenue and the means to communicate until they're able to use their voice properly and soon drop signing altogether when the time comes. As for speaking it's a lifelong process, sometimes intensive, for deaf/hh toddlers as they grow up, especially among those with hearing parents. I thank my mother for her efforts and intervened early enough to make an impact.

You hit it right on the nail...."baby talk"....

Both of my parents are deaf and I'm hearing. I signed with them until I was about 12, then refused to use ASL. You know how teens are. I have since made my peace with God and use ASL to speak with them. I did have to learn ASL again because I forgot most everything I knew. Now that I have kids I'm teaching them how to sign because they can't communicate yet. I also want them to be able to talk with their grandparents with a video phone.

As far as expecting deaf to learn how to speak, now that's just silly. Yes it would help a deaf person speak towards a hearing person, but it doesn't help the deaf person understand what a hearie is saying. Maybe we won't be too far off from having a speach to text device. My phone will do it pretty well.

As a teacher's point of view, teaching infants and toddlers how to sign makes parents very happy. They think their kids are really smart. From a healthcare specialist, helping the deaf and hard of hearing to speak will help them in the hearing world.

I saw it. So, in some way, that is so ironic. Understandable that the majority of hearing people encourages deaf kids to learn how to speak.

so you support the cause of not signing to deaf kids??

Both...sign and speak...small words at the beginning..."ma ma.....da da...bottle....etc., using signs and mouthing the words. My children were not deaf and I'm late deafened. I would expose them to both worlds at an early age, and continue until they were old enuf for pre-K.

To the answer your question....Audism is why.
