I am new here and I had a question. Is there a sound in decibels that would make a person go deaf instantly? Like after a few seconds of exposure?

Welcome to alldeaf! I believe it would be a warplane powered by a jet engine at full throttle. If you stand next to it, the deafening roars by and you could become deaf for sure, so that's why they wear earmuffs/earplugs to prevent from going deaf.

My brother who was in the Marines Corps years ago told me that he and other recruits at the time learned why they had to start wearing ear plugs. It was guns and bombs that can cause you to become deaf! Then why not the military allow deaf people!!??? Duh!

This is one of many factors. Someone here said about planes. That is correct. Even commerical airlines. I remember as a passenager, I saw crew have those large yellow ear thingy to cover their ears since it is loud with the engines running when they load up or unload luggages, sewages, and taxiing planes.

There are other major factors too that cause deafness. Did you noticed music players and singers wear ear plugs? They too can lose hearing because they stand so close to human size speakers at large concerts.

There are more! Wearing your walkmans (walkmans, MP3 players, ipod, etc) and plug it in your ears can cause you deafness only if you turn it all the way up. One rock star whom I can not recall his name said that he lost his hearing because of wearing the ear piece and turned it up high and he regretted now since that caused him to be deaf. My sister lost one ear due to high volume turned up from her radio and had headphones on. Real dumb!

My advice for hearing people: pleaseeeee, turn it low when wearing headphones or ear pieces! And wear ear plugs when you are at a rock concert standing close!!! Thank you!
