I’d like to introduce myself to the group as I have just registered. My name is Lisa Nickel and I am the Public Educator for the Charleston County Consolidated 9-1-1 Center in South Carolina. The Charleston County Consolidated 9-1-1 Center serves all of Charleston County for Public Safety emergencies: Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services and Fire Departments.
Although we have the ability to handle calls by using our TTY/TDD, we understand that the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community does not use this means of communication very much or at all.
At this time, texting to 9-1-1 is not available in Charleston County. Currently, if someone tries to text 9-1-1, they will receive a “bounce back message” telling the person texting that this service is not available. Please continue to use TTY/TDD or the South Carolina Relay Service to contact us.
There are meetings underway in Charleston County where the topic of texting 9-1-1 is being reviewed by 9-1-1 professionals and once we are closer to a date when texting 9-1-1 will be available, we will notify you by posts such as this.
If you would like to contact me or to be put on an email list for future notifications, please email me at: lnickel@charlestoncounty.org
Thank you for your time and I hope to work closely with you in the near future.
