Calif. Plane Crash Kills Ex-TV Host, Wife

Peter Tomarken, who gained fame hosting the 1980s game show "Press Your Luck," was flying a charity mission to pick up a needy medical patient when his plane began having engine troubles.

He was apparently trying to return to the airport just off Santa Monica Bay when the plane went down in the water Monday morning, killing the 63-year-old and his wife, authorities said.

Tomarken's first game show was "Hit Man!", which ran for 13 weeks on NBC, followed by the four-year hit "Press Your Luck" on CBS, known for its giggling "whammies."

In 1987, Tomarken was on ABC with a show called "Bargain Hunters," then went to the syndicated "Wipe-Out" in 1990. He returned to game shows in 2000 with the program "Paranoia."

"He was always a fun guy to be around, and he just loved the genre of game shows," said his agent, Fred Wostbrock.

Tomarken also had a compassionate streak. He flew for Angel Flight West, a nonprofit organization that provides free air transportation for needy medical patients, said Doug Griffith, a spokesman for the charity.

Griffith said Tomarken and his wife, Kathleen Abigail Tomarken, 41, were flying to San Diego on Monday to pick up a passenger who needed to get to UCLA Medical Center.

They were apparently trying to return to return to Santa Monica Airport because of engine trouble when the Beech A36 prop plane went down, said Allen Kenitzer, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

"They were so enthusiastic and so excited to be able to use their airplane to help people in need," Griffith said.

A third person was initially believed to be aboard the plane, prompting divers to spend most of the day searching. Coast Guard spokesman Tony Migliorini later said the third person listed in the flight plan may have been the patient Tomarken had been headed to San Diego to pick up.

The plane, registered to Tomarken, was found in 19 feet of water about 200 yards offshore.

:tears: I am not really familiar with this game show, but, I feel so bad this happened to this poor man and his wife. They set out to do something good, and look how it turned out. I pray that God will bless both of them. I am sure they will be missed by a lot of people who watched his game show.
