Expert: Pregnant Dolphin May Be Deaf - Local News

A pregnant bottlenose dolphin who didn't want to go back into waters off the Keys may be deaf.

Dolphins need to hear in order to utilize dolphin sonar. By listening to echoes of sounds they produce, dolphins locate objects and fish for food.

An expert who examined the dolphin -- named Castaway -- said it's likely the animal wasn't born deaf because she wouldn't have been able to survive so long.

Castaway stranded off Vero Beach in November, but was deemed healthy enough for release on Jan. 30.

But instead of swimming offshore, she returned to the beach three times and was transported to the Keys.
