Am going to fix a good friend's computer tonight. He emailed me to let me know his computer "died". After asking questions, I learned his computer boots up fine, it gets to Windows XP fine, he can see his desktop background and all his icons. He can hover over those icons with the mouse, but cannot click on any of them to open any programs including the internet. He bought a new mouse thinking the mouse was not working, and that changed nothing for him. I have yet to see the computer, but does anyone have any initial thoughts? (I know I can do a hdd rewrite, etc. but trying to avoid that first as he has stuff he'd like to back up first if possible.)

what type of mouse is he using?
a psu mouse cannot be plugged into a computer unless it is powered down! plugging one in with the power on can destroy the motherboard.
a usb mouse can be plugged in while the computer is running.

if there is still no mouse movement after this
test the mouse on another computer to verify that they are working.

another option is to check the mouse in the control panel to see if it has been disabled
you should be able to use the cursor and tab key to navigate there
