I can see that ASL students who have a hard time finding decent ASL users events or any where. I can see some of ASL students want to make friends who are ASL users through online. *smh*. I can understand that it's very hard for them to meet ASL users in person. I am guilty of not willing to meeting ASL students only if they are paying me or they are FUN people to chat with.

Recently, My good friend who is a Deaf ASL teacher, and begged some of us to go to a certain bar so her ASL students can meet us at the apprioriate ages. Those ASL students told the Deaf ASL teacher that they met too many OLD deaf people that they have no interests to interact with, but wanted to interact with from age 20s to 50 - 60's, not over 70's.

It seems to me that it is getting worse and worse for ASL students that there are too many hoh/deaf who prefer who want to speak instead.

if my thread does not make sense to you , dont worry about it.

I would not call you guilty. If you spend time with an ASL student, you're doing them a big favor. They should at least be interesting. Or pay you, or something. It shouldn't be a miserable thankless experience for you. Your time and your knowledge have value.

And that seems like a very strange request that the students made to your friend. If they find Deaf people to interact with, they should be grateful and find ways to make something good out of the interaction. To reject these people because they're old shows a lack of class and a lack of creativity. Old people aren't worthless. They've just been alive longer. It's not so hard to find something interesting to talk about.

I don't think it's so bad for ASL students. If someone is lucky enough to find a class they can afford and that they can get to, and if they have a good teacher, there's so much they can do to supplament that. So much great ASL video footage online and at libraries, so many great texts on Deaf history, this website is available to learn about deaf people's experiences and Deaf culture, skype for extra practice. I think that if people really want to learn, they probably can.

I'm sure they're students. Maybe they don't want to interact with someone old enough to be their parents or Grandma. Not defending them, but I understand where they're coming from.

Yeah, it can be hard to find talented deaf people. Many talented deaf people want no part of Deaf World. Therefore many ASL students talk to anyone just to learn about Deaf World. Not a bad thing, but it would be nice if ASL students took more effort to talk to talented deaf people.

Also, Deaf World is small so if a person don't want to interact with older deaf people, word will travel fast. Karma would bite you.

I have only met two deaf ASL users here. While i was not looming for help i had opportunity to chat with them. One I am a friend of and the other one gets frustrated at my ASL skills (which i know they are not the best since i am verly on ASL 2) a teacher thought it would be a wonderful idea if i translated the class for her.....i can totally see why she is frustrated. I cant keep up yet with trnslating yet. x_x idk... i think i would be pretty greatful if someone, no matter the age, decied to chat with me in ASL.

The ASL students are growing while (hoh/deaf/Deaf) ASL user are decreasing. So it is difficult for the ASL students to find ASL users. I feel for them.

True. Its nice to see ASL students are growing, but ASL users (deaf) are getting smaller due to creating hearing loss kids to learn how to speak or listen without ASL that are growing. eh.

So one day in the not so far future, there would be a large # of ASL interpreters who wouldn't be able to find people to use ASL with.

Not saying that ASL will die, but there will be much, much more interpreters than needed.

I'm starting to see that. Deaf events that I go to in MI seems to have more ASL students than deaf people sometimes.

exaclty. Thats what I am seeing, more ASL students than ASL users at some events.

It's not just hearing technology and oralism that is changing things. Captioned tv, plus text and email make it much less imperative for deaf people to get out to socialize.

Life changes always.

True true true. I know several people chose to keep themselve in private.

Another thing too, this afternoon I talked to my daughter in another state for an hour on video.
That contributes a lot to people feeling no need to get out just to socialize.
