this reminds me of what RIT people told me. there was a scare last year or something at RIT about a student carrying a samurai sword.... but it turned out to be an umbrella.

I have a memory of years ago there being a news story in the US of a diplomat in London (during the cold war) being killed by a fake umbrella that shot a dart. It is long enough ago that I can't remember details and am not sure of the best way to do a search.
