Police say Claiborne County man shot at train » Knoxville News Sentinel

Authorities say Claiborne County resident Mark Anthony Bruce was irate when he learned a train struck and killed his deaf friend.

So he allegedly got drunk, grabbed an AK-47, walked to the tracks where his buddy died and opened fire on a Norfolk Southern Railroad train. No one was injured during the late-night June 2 shooting in the Tipprell community, but it did land Bruce, 47, behind bars.

According to Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray, on the evening of the incident a 911 caller reported a shooting near a set of railroad tracks where 42-year-old Timothy Miracle of Harrogate, Tenn., was killed May 29. Miracle, who Ray said was deaf and mute, had been on the tracks when a train carrying coal fatally struck him.

Sheriff's Capt. David Honeycutt said Bruce showed up a few days later at the tracks after a train stopped so two Norfolk Southern employees could conduct a routine safety check.

"You killed my friend, get the hell outta here," Honeycutt said Bruce told the train employees, then pumped about five rounds into the train.

Witnesses put Bruce near the tracks at the time of the shooting, and when deputies arrested Bruce at his Tipprell Road home June 3, they found an AK-47 in his bedroom, Honeycutt said.

Bruce admitted he'd been upset about his friend, had been drinking heavy that night and realized it wasn't the railroad company's fault, Honeycutt said.

He's due in court today to be arraigned on an aggravated assault charge.
