Plea to help train dogs for deaf people - Features - Peterborough Today

PUPPIES looking to prove they are man’s best friend need homes in Peterborough as they embark on training to become hearing dogs.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are appealing for people to take home, train and care for a puppy for the first 12 to 14 months of its life.

Kate Mahon, a volunteer puppy socialiser, said looking after their first puppy, sprocker spaniel Ellie, had been rewarding for all of her family.

Working from their home in Longthorpe, Peterborough, Kate said Ellie was the perfect companion for her family, made up of husband Aidan, daughter Clare (13), son Laurie (11) and two elderly cats.

She said: “As far as the children are concerned having a puppy in the house is fantastic as it is a chance for them to learn the responsibilities of having a pet – that you have to walk it even in the rain and pick up their poo.

“The downside is that you have to say goodbye to the puppy in the end after 12 months and you never know if they pass their tests or not.

“We miss Ellie but we are looking forward to getting the next one in. You go out as a family a lot more when you have a dog. It’s been fantastic and we’ve really, really enjoyed it.”

The appeal follows an influx of new pups to the charity over the last few weeks who need to be taught basic obedience and introduced to different everyday sights, sounds, smells, experiences and environments that they will need to become comfortable with in their career ahead as a hearing dog.

Volunteers need to be over 18 years old, based at home for the majority of the day and able to ensure that the dog is not left alone frequently.

A safe and secure garden with direct access to the volunteer’s house is also necessary, as well as access to a vehicle.

They also need to attend fortnightly classes in Orton Waterville.
