THE HIGH Court has admitted a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a group of visually challenged students seeking directions to the State Government to fill up the vacant posts in various departments reserved for blind, deaf and other handicapped persons.

The students Rajesh Kumar Singh and four others alleged that the State Government during recruitment process was not complying with provisions of different circulars including the circular of July 31, 2001 wherein six per cent posts are reserved for blind, deaf and other handicapped persons in class 2,3 and 4 services.

The six per cent posts are further divided. Thus two per cent posts each are reserved in government services for blinds, deaf and other handicapped categories, the PIL pointed out.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice A K Patnaik and Justice Deepak Verma heard the petitioners’ counsels S C Sharma and Deepika Jha before issuing notices to the State Government and others.

The PIL also seeks directions for improving facilities in a hostel run by the Rajya Apang Kalyan Sansthan, a government body here for deaf, dumb and blinds students and for enhancing an amount of Rs. five paid to writers to help them write examinations.
