Picnic a chance for deaf to network | The Coloradoan | coloradoan.com

A special picnic will be held Saturday for families raising children who are deaf or have trouble hearing.

The Northern Colorado Hands and Voices picnic will take place at 10 a.m. at Boardwalk Park. It will provide an opportunity for families and children to network and develop relationships with one another.

"It's nice for families to be able to meet other families who are affected with hearing loss," said Valerie Walker, the Northern Colorado Coordinator for Hands and Voices.
Hands and Voices is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families with deaf or hard-of-hearing children that started in Colorado and has gone national.

A performance will take place at the picnic at 11 a.m. by Eric Melvin and Angelyne, his deaf Australian cattle dog. Angelyne performs numerous tricks and knows over 40 hand signals and non-verbal cues.

"The goal is to connect and inspire people and let them know that through diversity can come success if you can see the bigger picture," said Melvin, Angelyne's trainer and owner.

The presentation by Eric and Angelyne is sponsored in part by the Amazing Angelyne Foundation.

Melvin found out Angelyne was born deaf when she was 13 weeks old. Faced with the decision of whether or not to keep her, Melvin kept his puppy.

"It's given me the opportunity to become a teacher, inspirer and motivator," Melvin said.

The pair has done shows in various parts of the state, including at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School.
