newtimesonline.com - Parties Urged To Engage Sign Interpreters For Deaf And Dumb

THE chairman of the Winneba branch of the Deaf and Dumb Association, Mr Victor Essien, has appealed to political parties to engage the services of sign interpreters to translate their messages at their rallies to their members.

He said this would enable the deaf and dumb to understand their messages and make informed choices.

According to him, "the deaf and dumb cast their votes with the influence of relatives and appearances of pictures on the ballot papers because they did not hear or understand the messages of the parties and their flag-bearers."

Mr Essien made the appeal at an emergency meeting of the association at Winneba, where he spoke through a lecturer of the Special Education Unit of the University of Education, Winneba.

He urged parents of people with disabilities to give them the necessary education to make them contribute towards the development of the nation.

Mr Essien appealed for assistance to construct a social centre for the people with disabilities in the area.

Mr Mike Hammah, National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Effutu, who took advantage of the opportunity to address them, said the NDC being socially democratic, broad-based, and with human-centre policies, will help people with disabilities to enable them to contribute towards national development when it comes to power.

He urged them to avoid indiscriminate sex and other social vices that could lead them into other problems.

:ugh: Wtf is going on with the word "dumb"? Why can they say deaf and mute instead of deaf and dumb. Those people are dumb (stupid in their head) if they realize Deafies are intelligent and just couldn't hear and could not use the voice at all. Of course, we need interpreters to interpret us to understand what people are saying and for the Deaf to tell the interpreter to translate back to the hearing person. This is our natural ASL or any sign languages whether we speak or not. Those people are worse off than audists.
