Partially Blind Man Accused Of DUI In Boulder - Denver News Story - KMGH Denver

A man, who is blind in one eye and deaf, was arrested in Boulder on suspicion of drunken driving and accused of nearly hitting pedestrians when his car struck a curb, police said.

David Cabral, 23, was arrested early Friday morning when police said officers responded to reports that a car "almost struck several pedestrians when it struck the curb" at 13th Street and College Avenue, just west of the University of Colorado campus.

Witnesses said the vehicle was silver and possibly lost some hub caps when it hit the curb, police said.

An officer traveling east on College spotted a silver Toyota Matrix traveling the same direction, a police report said.

The Toyota stopped for a red light at Broadway, then crept forward despite the red light until it halted over the intersection stop line, the officer, who stopped behind the car, wrote in his report.

When the light turned green, the Toyota remained stopped, the officer noted. The car finally pulled forward, making an illegally wide turn without a signal and driving south on Broadway.

The car hit the center median, began weaving and the driver straddled two lanes for a block, according to the police report.

The officer pulled the Toyota over and noticed the car was missing two hub cabs on the driver-side tires.

When the officer asked Cabral for his driver's license and registration, his passenger, Alma Sever, said the driver is deaf and does not speak, the police report said. She said Cabral, a native of Spain, reads and signs Spanish better than English. She added that he can sign and read English.

Sever said Cabral also is blind in his right eye, the report said.

Sever used sign language to translate for Cabral.

The officer said Cabral smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot, the report said. The man also had trouble getting his driver's license out of his wallet.

Police said Cabral was unsteady on his feet and stumbled getting out of the car.

The officer asked the driver how much alcohol he had consumed.

And Cabral signed -- with Sever translating -- that he'd had two beers and two shots of whiskey about one hour earlier, the police report said.

The officer said Cabral failed the field sobriety test, stumbling repeatedly while attempting to stand on one leg, the report said.

A field breath test showed that Cabral's blood-alcohol level was 0.179 percent -- more than twice the state's drunken driving threshold of 0.08 percent, the report said.

Cabrala was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Two breath tests at the jail showed Cabral had a 0.158 blood-alcohol level. He was also cited for making an illegal turn and lane violation.
