WILSON, N.C. – Some parents of children who are deaf say their anxiety is rising as they wait to hear which of the state's three schools for the deaf and blind will close.

Due to budget cuts, state lawmakers are forcing the Department of Public Instruction to close one of three schools for students with visual or hearing disabilities.

Parents with children who attend the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson said they're very stressed.

"It's hard to just go back. To, you know, back to what you had or try to keep what you got,” said It's just hard. And you know when you see him sign and he's thriving and all that. It just hurts,” said parent Becky Goodwin.

The DPI must make its recommendation of which school to shut down by Jan.15. If lawmakers approve, the selected school will close July 1.
