Deaf parents are being invited to special workshops hosted by Brent Council and a national charity to help them learn extra skills for raising their children.

The workshops are being held every Friday morning for a month and will look at issues such as discipline; challenging children's behaviour; co-operation and negotiating skills; identifying boundaries; and also at family agreements.

They are being run by the national charity Deaf Parenting UK for deaf parents with children aged up to nine and living in Brent. The programme for parents has been organised with the help of Brent Council's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Team.

An induction loop will be fitted for hearing aid users and there will also be a British Sign Language interpreter present. Each workshop will have a free crèche for pre-school age children.

Councillor Reg Colwill, Lead Member for Adults, Health and Social Care,
said: "This is an excellent opportunity for deaf parents to pick up extra expertise in parenting. Deaf parents have varying needs; they can be a single mother or father, with hearing or deaf children, have step children or be a foster carer.

"Through the workshops they will be able to meet others and find out about help and support available in the borough. I hope to see many people there."

The workshops will be at 36 London Road, Wembley, from 10.45am-12.45pm. For more information contact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Team on 0208 937 4669 or by Minicom on 0208 937 4677, or email info@**********.org.uk text/SMS 07789027186, or fax 0871 2643323.

They will be held on Friday, January 11; Friday, January 18; Friday January 25; Friday, February 1; and Friday, February 8.

This is a good thing. Parenting classes have traditionally been designed with hearing parents in mind...and hearing chidlren. What I would like to see is a parenting class for hearing parents of deaf children. Now that's something that is needed.
