Pain At The Pumps = Pain At The Polls Is Working!

One of the other problems is that oil is a commodity that has its price affected by speculation. The oil we are using today was most likely purchased at much lower prices. The speculation affects todays prices regardless of what the oil was purchased at or how long ago.

I totally agree that we need to develop other alternatives.

Indeed, oil is a commodity but realize that speculation has become more of a problem now because demand is outstripping supply. Whereas before, there was plenty to go around and hence little speculation. It all goes back to the basic law of supply and demand. If we can develop alternatives to the point to allow us to really reduce our demand, then the pendulum will go the other way again. But make no mistake, we will never again see oil as the solution for the future. Its day has come and gone...

What really urkes me is that the oil companies are reporting record profits right now.. In the Billions... How about they just cut into their profits a bit and give us a break at the pump.

I understand where you are coming from with this. I agree it is positively obscene the amount of profits big Oil gets from it. What kind of break are you looking for? You have to be careful what you ask for or you may get it! Remember, the higher prices is forcing everybody to take a long hard look at this crazy situation. Personnally if you ask me, this should have happened the first time around back in the 70's. Necessity is the mother of invention and it is during times like this that viable solutions appear out of the woodwork. Yes, it is painful and can really wreak the economy but until people understand the gravity of the situation, nothing will change. Hitting people in the wallet is the most surefire way of getting everybody's attention...
