Indeed, oil is a commodity but realize that speculation has become more of a problem now because demand is outstripping supply. Whereas before, there was plenty to go around and hence little speculation. It all goes back to the basic law of supply and demand. If we can develop alternatives to the point to allow us to really reduce our demand, then the pendulum will go the other way again. But make no mistake, we will never again see oil as the solution for the future. Its day has come and gone...
