Oregon Professor to File Suit for Being Fired for Snapping at Student to Stop Talking

Threatening to shoot him? I don't think he will really have much chance of getting his job back.

It would have been better just to drop him from the course.

Well, he didn't actually threaten to shoot the student, but was connecting the respect he had to show in Pakistan, which involved the use of a gun, and respect in the classroom. Both were incidents of cross cultural contact.

I could see a reprimand, or even a leave without pay for a period of time. But firing is a bit extreme, IMO. I mean, this is a college level class, and students should be expected to act like adults. Of course, there may have been other ways to handle the student, but I know from teaching college classes, that you resond to these things in the moment.

The way I see it, he hasn't had any previous complaints. If he'd had a history of student complaints about his teaching style, I could justify firing, but as it's just the incident, pay without leave or suspension would have been appropriate.

The student should have discussed his problem with the teacher first, before taking it to higher levels.

The student was just a crybaby.
Yeah. That's how it is nowadays.

It was probably a student who wasn't doing well in class and thought this was a perfect opportunity to get rid of the teacher.
