JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The only woman on Florida's death row is appealing the sentence she received for the murders of a Jacksonville couple who were buried alive.
The Florida Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of Tiffany Ann Cole, 27, that included her claim she didn't know co-defendants planned to bury the victims alive.
She was sentenced to die for her role in the 2005 murders of Reggie and Carol Sumner after the couple was taken at gunpoint from their St. Nicholas home, robbed of jewelry and cash, forced to turn over the PIN number for their ATM card before being thrown into graves just north of the Georgia border.
Two men also have been sentenced to death in the case and a third is serving a 45-year prison term.
Michael Jackson, called by prosecutors the ringleader of the group, and Allen Wade are on death row. Bruce Nixon, who testified for the state against the others, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
During the trial, prosecutors said Cole was the connection between all four defendants and the twovictims. Cole was a neighbor of the Sumners in South Carolina before they moved to Jacksonville and investigators said she befriended the couple, then brought in her friends to commit the crime.
