One dead as storm rolls across Puget Sound region
A Seattle woman died when a tree struck her van during a vicious squall Friday afternoon.

MONROE, Wash. -- A weather squall that rolled through the Puget Sound region Friday afternoon claimed the life of a Seattle woman when a tree crashed into her van.
The 46-year-old woman was driving near Monroe around 3:45 p.m. when a tree fell across the road near 260th Ave. SE and Ben Howard Road, striking her van, said Rebecca Hover with the Snohomish County Sheriff's office.
The driver was killed. Her 51-year-old passenger was taken to Valley General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their names have not been released.
Winds blew down another tree in Lynnwood, crashing into a parked truck and nearly hitting a motorcyclist.
The storm also knocked a tree across Locust Way in Lynnwood, right in front of a passing motorcyclist. He ditched the bike just as it went into the tree, but was not injured. The tree also crashed through a power line and into an empty parked truck across the street.
Power was knocked out to about 75 people in the neighborhood. Snohomish PUD said it could be well into Friday evening before power was restored.
Some of the wind speeds were quite impressive. Gig Harbor and Tacoma both had sudden gusts to 47 mph, while Everett hit 41mph, Port Angeles hit 40 and Seattle hit 38.
Here in Downtown Seattle, it blew away the U.S. and Washington state flags atop the pole at the Pacific Science Center.
The rest of the evening should be much calmer once this squall moves away, leaving with just scattered showers and lows in the mid-upper 30s.
