The Oklahoma School for the Deaf has a new group of national champions. Their womens basketball team was just announced as this season's winners. The last time the school in Sulphur won a national championship was back in 1952. It was the men's basketball team. KTEN's Sarah Lindenberg reports.
When this team lost to texas in a regional tourament they thought it was over but not for long soon they were named national champions.
The team is made up of ten Oklahoma girls. Three of the team mates are from Sulphur.
On top of the honor of being named national champions the osd has something else to cheer about. The Deaf All-American squad selected three Lady Indians to compete on their ten member team. One of which is a senior from Aulphur who was the runner up for Miss Deaf Oklahoma this year. Kelsey Jones says she is honored to be chosen but says everyone on her team is an all american.
"We never dreamed that we would be named national champions," Gayle Luna, assistant coach said.
"We had lost to texas in that tournament and i thought we won't have a chance to be national champs. And we got in and i was really really excited," Kelsey Jones, deaf all-american said.
The whole team is ecstatic. They have worked together for a long time. Some of them have been playing on the same team since fourth grade. They shared with KTEN that their secret might be their special signals between them.
