Good memory!

I almost forgot all about chewing the cords until I read this thread.

I think Africa's Third World countries would apprecticed to receive your old hearing aids or you don't using it anymore, as I saw a flyer about it at the Thrift/Charity shops.
 
I know this is an old thread, but I'm looking around on here and loved seeing all the photos. I used to have a 'radio aid' (FM receiver- is that the same as a body worn aid?) to wear at school, and I used to chew on the cord as well! Mind you I hated using it, the wires got in the way and I couldn't hear anything except the teacher over FM- so I couldn't hear what people next to me were saying, very well. We had little 'module' things to put in depending on which class it was, as each teacher had a different frequency transmitter. I used to lose my module pieces all the time (like the size of a small piece of lego) and get told off..when I was bored in class I'd switch over to the other freqency and listen to the teacher in the next room instead.

My grandfather had a old-timey hearing aid from the time that I can remember. That would be the late 60's. I wonder how long he'd had it at that time. It had a box and a chord. It squealed a lot!

Oh they're still around, see Lloyd's hearing aid. Not many wear them though.

I remember that I was the last kid in my oral class to get behind the ear hearing aid. I think that was in 1975 if I recall correctly.

I remember my first hearing aid which was a metal box with a black volume control button screwed on top of it. My mother says the audiologist told her to only let me wear my hearing aid for a few minitues at a time so I could get used to it and when it was time to take it off me, I refused to let her take it off me.

Well in the US for some reason Body worn aids aren't too popular.....they ARE popular in other countries (even European countries)
I think they should revitalize body worn aid usage. I know some people who wear BTEs but who also use body worns.....and I think in some cases they could give more power to some people who while they have a pretty bad loss, don't qualify for CI implantation. I mean people with moderate losses can hear somewhat with ITE aids but they can hear EVEN MORE with BTEs. So it makes sense that some people with worse losses might be able to hear more with a body worn as opposed to BTEs.

Probably cause the rest of us got our aids free that we were given body aids. My nana and I had little oblong box ones with cord to ear in the 60's. I used to put mine in my school uniform pocket. Everytime you moved you could hear the rustle of it brushing against your clothing. terrible aids, they picked up every little screech around the classroom. Also just wearing a hearing aid in one ear isn't such a good idea. Definitely better now I have 2 hearing aids in both ears as both are about the same hearing loss.

Maybe I'll move to BTE next ones. Do they stay in your ears oks or do they fall out when you bend down etc?

BTE have strong earmolds so they wouldn't go anywhere even if they fell out from behind your ear. My ears smash the BTE's to my head. I don't think I could make them fall out. :lol:
 
wow, I sure did learn something by reading about this history. The pictures and illustrations were interesting. My hubby had HA's in his glasses bows when he was in elementary school. He said they were a big pain and always breaking. Then he never wore them again til after he graduated from college.
