Nearly fifty per cent of the children in the Thoppur village in Tamil Nadu's Dindigul district suffer from speech and hearing impairments.

The peculiar situation has continued for over 20 years.

What makes matters worse is the fact that the breadwinners of these families, who are tree climbers, cannot afford treatment and rehabilitation for their children.

"We simply do not understand why our children are born speech and hearing impaired," a local resident said.

Official apathy

The villagers allege that the district administration has been indifferent, and their demands for a scientific investigation and a special school for their children have gone unheard.

"We told the authorities about this, but they didn't take note. So we decided to live with it," a local resident said.

The children in the village are now growing up without education.

"When we admitted our children to special schools in Palani, they were not willing to stay there and came running back home," a resident said.

The District Collector says he is not aware of the problem, but health officials claim they have sent in a report and are in the process of referring the case to the Madurai Medical College.

But even as the blame game continues, a whole generation of children is facing a bleak future, and the real cause of the problem continues to be a mystery.
